Mild steel black pipe generally has a low carbon percentage, which ranges from 0.05% to 0.25%, to provide good weldability and formability which are important properties of mild steel pipes. It has a density of approximately 7. 85 g/cm³, yield strength of between 250 and 360 Mpa, and tensile strength of between 400 and 510 Mpa. The major components of MS Pipe are iron and carbon and it also contains manganese, silicon, sulfur and phosphorus in a very limited quantity.
Mild steel pipes are versatile since they are both durable and cheap and thus used in many applications. They are particularly suitable for carrying water, gas, and sewage since they are corrosion-resistant and strong. They can easily be welded and incorporated in construction and infrastructure projects. MS pipes can also be used in the manufacturing of machinery and automobile parts since it is easy to machine and possess good mechanical properties. Furthermore, they have applications in furniture and ornamental products because of their flexibility while providing a good combination of strength and the ability to be shaped.

The diameters available are from 1/8 inches up to 24 inches or more and the wall thicknesses up to Schedule 160 and beyond. Lengths normally range from 6 meters (20 feet) and above to meet versatility in construction, infrastructure and industries.
Mild steel pipes are tested to meet the required quality and safety standards. Hydrostatic pressure test is used to detect leakage while the non-destructive tests are ultrasonic or magnetic particle tests for structural assessment. They are often bunched in bundles and covered with plastic or steel straps to avoid cases of damage on transit so that they are delivered in a usable condition.
