Mild steel, also referred to as carbon steel, is a category of steel that contains a low amount of carbon, usually between 0. 05% to 0. 25%. This composition renders it comparatively easy to machine and also suitable for welding. Mild steel is commonly applied in different industries because of its cheap cost and adaptability. It is widely used in building structures, pipelines, automobile components, and mechanical equipment production.

Because of the low carbon content, mild steel possesses satisfactory tensile strength, enabling it to act as a shock absorber and not deform easily. However, when it comes to the resistance to corrosion, it is comparatively lower than the other types of steel available on the market, such as stainless steel. Because of its low tensile strength, mild steel can be galvanized or heat treated to increase the strength of the material. They are easy to form and are less costly than other materials, which makes them suitable for industrial and structural purposes.
